On the 22nd September 1949 a baby girl is born in Benoni. Her parents christen her by the name Hester Johanna Roux;

although she is nicknamed by her father from the time he lays eyes on her, as Ghenny. The reason why he chose to call her by this name is a matter we will not go into. This will always be sentiment between her and her deceased father. She is the 2nd eldest of what would later be 5 daughters.

Her parents move to Southern Rhodesia, which is today known as Zimbabe.Ghenny starts her school in a small town called Hartley. Her father worked on a mine called Gedzema. This was very much the same as a small farm Holding, Ghenny recalls this as having been the best time of her childhood…Very carefree and she remembers how she loved climbing trees, and remembers her mom always saying, you are a real tom boy, as she was always breaking either an arm or a straining an ancle.she was 16 years old when her parents decided to come back to South Africa. Ghenny and her eldest sister grew up in a very loving and Christian invirement, and remembers herself and her sister always singing with their mom in the car, in the kitchen and of course, they always sang together in church.
